HC orders Shami to pay ₹4L/month to estranged wife Hasin
Calcutta HC Orders Mohammed Shami to Pay ₹4 Lakh Monthly to Estranged Wife and Daughter
Team India’s senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has received a major legal setback as the Calcutta High Court has directed him to pay ₹4 lakh per month as maintenance to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their minor daughter. The order, passed by Justice Ajay Mukherjee, marks a crucial development in the ongoing legal battle between the two.
🔹 Breakup of Maintenance
As per the court’s ruling:
₹1.5 lakh is to be paid to Hasin Jahan for her personal expenses
₹2.5 lakh is allocated for the upkeep and education of their daughter
This judgment comes after Hasin Jahan appealed previous court decisions, asserting that her living expenses were much higher and that Shami, given his earnings as an international cricketer, could afford to provide more substantial support.
🔹 Timeline of Legal Battle
Hasin Jahan had originally filed for ₹7 lakh per month in alimony and an additional ₹3 lakh for their daughter’s education back in 2018. However, that request was denied on grounds that she earned her own income through modeling.
Initially, the Alipore court mandated Shami to pay ₹80,000/month. This was later revised by a district court to ₹50,000 for Hasin and ₹80,000 for the child. Dissatisfied, she escalated the matter to the High Court, claiming her monthly needs exceeded ₹6.5 lakh while Shami’s annual income was approximately ₹7.5 crore.
After reviewing financial records and arguments from both sides, the High Court ruled in Hasin’s favour, emphasizing Shami’s earning capacity and responsibility toward his family.
🔹 Off-field Troubles Mount for Shami
This legal blow comes amid fitness issues that have kept Shami away from the cricket field. He last featured for India during the World Test Championship Final in June 2023 against Australia. Though he recovered from ankle surgery in February 2024, he later experienced right knee pain, preventing a full return to red-ball cricket.
Shami was left out of the ongoing England Test series, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirming that the pacer is not fit to handle the demands of Test cricket at this time. “There is no point taking a bowler whose fitness is not up to the mark,” he added.
Shami has yet to respond publicly to the court’s decision.
