India a co-traveller in Ghana's growth journey, says PM Modi in visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his historic visit to Ghana on July 2, 2025, emphasized that India is not merely a partner but a co-traveller in the West African nation’s journey of development. After holding extensive talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in Accra, PM Modi announced the elevation of India-Ghana ties to a Comprehensive Partnership.
This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades, and President Mahama welcomed Mr. Modi at the airport in a special diplomatic gesture.
Speaking to the media, PM Modi said the two nations aim to double bilateral trade within the next five years and highlighted that India has already invested around $2 billion in nearly 900 projects across Ghana. He stressed India’s commitment to deepening economic ties and broadening cooperation in key sectors.
The leaders also signed four significant agreements covering areas such as cultural exchange, traditional medicine, fintech, and critical mineral exploration. PM Modi offered India’s support in sharing its fintech expertise, especially in UPI digital payments, to help modernize Ghana’s financial infrastructure.
In addition, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to combat global terrorism, with PM Modi calling terrorism “the enemy of humanity.” The two leaders agreed to further strengthen cooperation in security and counterterrorism measures.
This visit marks a major step in India’s engagement with Africa and underlines its growing role in the development and strategic interests of the Global South.
