Millions of workers' US college loan forgiveness program is limited by Donald Trump: Report
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program's eligibility was restricted by an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. According to a Business Insider article, this program forgives student loans for certain occupations, such as teachers, medical professionals, and law enforcement personnel, following ten years of qualifying payments.
According to the research, as of December 2024, up to 2 million borrowers were enrolled in the scheme. Organizations involved in "activities that advance illegal immigration, terrorism, child abuse, discrimination, and public disruptions" would not be allowed to participate in the program, according to Trump's directive.
The report cited the order as stating, "The PSLF Program also creates perverse incentives that can increase the cost of tuition, can load students in low-need majors with unsustainable debt, and may push students into organizations that subvert our national interest under the guise of a non-profit designation."
