Earthquake today LIVE: Major hospital in Myanmar declared 'mass casualty area'; building down in Bangkok
On Friday, a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Myanmar, spreading sensations as far as China, Thailand, and portions of India. The earthquake also caused roads in the capital, Naypyidaw, to break. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the Myanmar earthquake was situated at a depth of 10 kilometers, approximately 12:50 pm local time (0620 GMT), and 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the city of Sagaing.
Additionally, tremors were detected in Bangkok and northern Thailand, where many rushed to the streets as buildings trembled. The shaking was reported as far north as Chiang Mai, and there were unverified reports and images of a building fall in Bangkok's Chatuchak neighborhood.
The tremors caused Bangkok, Thailand, to cease some light rail and metro services. Vietnam was also shaken by the earthquake in Myanmar. China's southwest Yunnan province also experienced tremors; Beijing's earthquake agency reported the tremors as a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.
