German Election Results 2025 Live Updates: Germany heads to polls on Sunday to elect a new government, in a national election which opinion polls indicate could bring about a major shift.

The elections come at a crucial time, in view of concerns regarding the stagnation of Europe’s biggest economy, issues relating to migration and the war between Ukraine and Russia causing uncertainty.

The elections will witness a contest between the incumbent chancellor, the opposition leader, and the vice chancellor, and in a first, a leader of a far-right party.

Which way will the voters go? Although Germany has rarely handed an absolute majority to any candidate, Centre-right opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s Union Bloc has been leading the opinion polls.

Having registered 28-32 per cent support in recent surveys, Merz could replace incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as per the Associated Press. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has been advocating for stricter cubs on migration, was in second place with around 20 per cent of the votes.

The party has fielded its first candidate for chancellor in Alice Weidel, and is hoping to improve its previous best vote share of 12.6 per cent in the 2017 national election. Scholz’s Social Democrats have been polling between 14-16 per cent votes, which if it does happen, would be their worst postwar result in a general election, AP reported.
