Eggs have become so expensive that Americans are smuggling them from Mexico

According to the Wall Street Journal, travelers are getting captured smuggling eggs across the border from Mexico and occasionally even from Canada as a result of the skyrocketing prices of eggs in the United States. Imports of eggs are regulated in the US as eggs which have not been inspected through proper channels have the potential to spread disease.
Data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows that "egg interceptions" have increased by an unexpected 36% nationally so far this year in comparison to last year.
The increase in these imports is an indication of Americans' desperation and the extent to which they will go to obtain cheaper eggs. In the US, a dozen of the best-quality eggs cost, on average, $5.9 (more than ₹500) last month. According to data from the Labour Department, the cost of a dozen grade-A eggs was $3 last year.
