Ceasefire Claim by Trump
US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that his trade tariffs played a pivotal role in securing a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025. Speaking at an event in Miami, Florida, Trump claimed that threats of imposing tariffs prompted both nuclear-armed nations to stop fighting. “Tariffs did that… Without tariffs, that would have never happened,” Trump stated, reiterating that he had resolved eight conflicts in the nine months of his tenure.
Trump explained that he intervened amid ongoing trade negotiations with both countries. According to him, he warned that no trade deals would proceed unless India and Pakistan agreed to peace. “I said, ‘I’m not going to make any trade deals with you guys unless you agree to peace.’ They were shocked, and a day later, they announced a ceasefire,” he added. Trump also claimed that eight planes had been shot down during the conflict, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Under Trump’s announcement, India faced a 25 percent tariff on US goods, which increased to 50 percent after an additional levy linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil and its participation in BRICS. Pakistan faced a 19 percent tariff. Trump emphasized that these tariffs were a tool to ensure compliance with peace and trade objectives.
However, India has repeatedly denied Trump’s claims of involvement in the ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated during the G7 Summit in Canada that there were no discussions with the US on mediating between India and Pakistan or on a US-India trade deal at the time. India maintains that the ceasefire announcement in May 2025 was a sovereign decision between the two countries.
