IMD warns of flash flood risk for Bengaluru Urban & Rural as Cyclone Montha intensifies ahead of landfall; heavy rain, squally winds and local flooding likely on Oct 28.

Cyclone Montha Intensifies
Cyclone Montha intensified over the Bay of Bengal and is tracking toward an expected landfall near the Andhra coast on October 28, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue alerts for heavy rain and squally conditions across the eastern coast and interior districts. The storm’s outer bands are already affecting weather in Karnataka, raising flood and safety concerns for urban and rural districts around Bengaluru.
The IMD has issued a flash flood warning for Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban for October 28, citing light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers in low-lying neighbourhoods, watersheds and nearby catchments. Wind speeds associated with the system are estimated at 90–100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph near the storm centre, and squally winds of 40–60 kmph are expected along coastal Karnataka — conditions that could cause localised waterlogging, fallen trees and power outages. Residents in Kolar, Ramanagara, Chikkaballapura and surrounding districts should be especially alert.
City authorities and disaster-management teams are being urged to pre-position pumps and rescue equipment, clear drains and mark vulnerable points along major ghats and low-lying neighbourhoods. Transport agencies may announce temporary diversions or restrictions as rainfall intensifies; travellers should check live flight and rail updates before starting journeys. For households, practical steps include securing loose outdoor items, keeping emergency numbers on hand, charging essential devices and avoiding travel during heavy downpours.
