DUSU Leader Slaps DU Professor Amid Controversy

A controversy erupted at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Delhi University, after DUSU joint secretary and ABVP leader Deepika Jha slapped professor Sujit Kumar during a disciplinary committee meeting held to probe an earlier student scuffle. The episode — captured in a short clip that appears to be CCTV footage — took place in the presence of Delhi Police and has triggered a formal inquiry by the university.

In her account, Jha said the professor had been “staring” and “smirking” at her and allegedly used abusive language; she admitted hitting him out of anger, expressed regret and released an apology video that also accused the professor of being inebriated and threatening her in front of police. The professor denies that account and says ABVP members barged into the meeting uninvited.

Delhi University has constituted a six-member inquiry committee, chaired by Professor Neeta Sehgal, and directed a factual report within two weeks as the administration seeks to establish context, witness statements and the full CCTV record. Investigators have confirmed a complaint and said they are obtaining footage for verification.

The incident has provoked a strong reaction on campus: the Delhi University Teachers’ Association held a protest and student groups including the Students’ Federation of India condemned the assault, demanding accountability and sensitive handling of the probe. The episode raises wider questions about campus discipline, the role of student unions, and protocols for police presence during college hearings.

As the inquiry proceeds, key developments to watch are the committee’s factual findings, CCTV verification, any police action following the complaint, and university steps to de-escalate tensions between student organisations and faculty. Coverage should emphasise verified statements, committee timelines and official uploads of evidence rather than speculation.
