Winter Fog Disrupts Bihar Rail Travel

Bihar Train Delays Winter Fog 100 Trains Halted

The inevitable winter curtain of Dense Fog has descended early upon North India, and this year, the impact on rail travel across the eastern sector is proving to be exceptionally severe. The Indian Railways has taken the drastic, albeit safety-driven, measure of pre-emptively canceling or curtailing the frequency of approximately 100 trains operating to and from Bihar for the duration of the peak winter season. This massive logistical overhaul, concentrated primarily within the East Central Railway (ECR) zone, will affect the journeys of an estimated 45 lakh passengers between December 2025 and February 2026.

The ECR has officially announced the complete cancellation of over 24 pairs of Mail/Express trains—a total of 52 long-distance services—with an additional 28 services scheduled to run on shortened routes or with reduced frequency. This preemptive action, according to railway officials, is an unavoidable measure taken to prioritize Passenger Safety amidst extremely low visibility issues. During peak fog, safety protocols mandate that trains reduce their speed significantly, often to below 60 kmph. This restriction leads to catastrophic cascading delays, operational hazards, and severe congestion, making long-term cancellations the safer and more predictable alternative.
