US President Donald Trump to order plan to shut down US Education Department

According to a White House official, President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Thursday that calls for the closure of the US Education Department, fulfilling a campaign pledge to do away with an organization that conservatives have long targeted. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity before an announcement.
The Department of Education has been criticized by Trump as being wasteful and tainted by leftist ideology. However, without a congressional statute that established the agency in 1979, it is probably difficult to complete its destruction.
In order to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States, Secretary Linda McMahon will be instructed "to take all necessary steps to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely," according to a White House fact sheet.
