Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who has been under fire for his remarks on Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, was granted temporary anticipatory release by the Madras high court on Friday. The 36-year-old comedian told the high court earlier in the day that he had been "ordinarily a resident of this State since then" since relocating from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu in 2021 and that he was afraid of being arrested by Mumbai Police.
Due to his remarks about Shinde during his most recent performance in Mumbai, Kamra has been called in by the Mumbai police twice and has caused a great deal of controversy. His performance of a parody song directed at Shinde at the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, Mumbai, is the source of the issue.
Shiv Sena supporters strongly objected to the act and vandalized the club and the hotel where it is housed. After Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a charge accusing Kamra of uttering disparaging statements about the deputy chief minister, Kamra was arrested by the Khar police.
