Authorities in Lucknow said on Saturday that they had chosen to set up 35 designated halts throughout the city in order to control the movement of e-rickshaws and alleviate increasing traffic congestion. The decision comes after a joint committee, appointed by the district magistrate and police commissioner, developed a high-level action plan. E-rickshaws will be prohibited from entering other regions and limited to specific zones under the new system.
Eight operational zones have been established for the city, and e-rickshaws are only allowed to stop at authorized stops. Movement will be tracked by authorities via a code system, and those who operate outside of designated zones will be subject to severe sanctions.
In Lucknow, e-rickshaws have emerged as a vital form of transportation, giving thousands of commuters last-mile connectivity. But because of their unfettered mobility, there are now regular traffic jams and worries about road safety. Officials blame the issue on unrestricted driving throughout the city and the lack of authorized parking spaces.
