Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Joymalya Bagchi, who was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on Monday. Only a week has passed since the Union government approved his appointment to the highest court, which came after the Supreme Court collegium's March 6 recommendation. In addition to CJI Khanna, justices Bhushan R. Gavai, Surya Kant, Abhay S. Oka, and Vikram Nath make up the Supreme Court collegium.
The Supreme Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, has two vacancies, and Justice Bagchi fills one of them with this appointment. Although he will only serve as the CJI for a little more than four months before retiring on October 2, 2031, his time on the Supreme Court is anticipated to be especially noteworthy.
