A 24-year-old man was killed, and four others were injured in a terrible accident that occurred on Saturday at the annual Madduramma temple festival on the outskirts of Bengaluru. A tall 150-foot chariot that was a part of the religious procession for the festival crashed in the midst of bad weather in Rayasandra, Parappana Agrahara.
Strong winds and heavy rain caused the massive chariot to lose its balance and crash to the ground as hundreds of devotees handling the ropes rushed to safety. Last year, during the same festival, a chariot was toppled, damaging several parked vehicles, but no casualties were reported. The chaos started as the devotees were pulling the massive chariot towards the temple as part of the traditional ritual.
The festival organizers and the municipal authorities who authorized the event were criticized as the dramatic images of the chariot collapsing swiftly went viral on social media. Numerous people drew attention to the chariot's structural shortcomings and questioned why, despite the fact that there had been no casualties in the previous incident, it had happened in the same spot.
