India claimed on Friday that the "license" given to "extremist and secessionist elements" in the North American nation was the reason behind the decline in its bilateral ties.

The license granted to the nation's extremist and secessionist elements was the reason for the decline in India-Canada relations. Our aim is that we can reestablish our connections based on mutual trust and sensitivity,” ANI quoted ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal as saying. The MEA spokesperson's comments coincide with a shift in Ottawa's leadership, as Mark Carney took Justin Trudeau's place as prime minister.

Diversifying our commercial partnerships with like-minded nations is what Canada will be aiming for. Additionally, Carney had stated before to his swearing-in that "there are opportunities to rebuild the relationships with India—there needs to be a shared sense of values around that commercial relationship, and if I am the Prime Minister, I look forward to the opportunity to build that."
