An probe into the involvement of retired police officer Ramachandra Rao in the gold smuggling case involving his stepdaughter, actor Ranya Rao, has been ordered by the Karnataka government. According to news agency PTI, Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta would oversee the investigation to see whether the DGP-ranking officer was involved in any unlawful activity. The team will also look into the actor's alleged abuse of privileges and protocol to get over security measures and smuggle gold.
On March 3, Ranya Rao was detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIAD) in Bengaluru in possession of 14.8 kilograms of gold, valued at an estimated ₹12.56 crore. She allegedly stole the gold from Dubai, according to the authorities. After receiving a tip that led to the arrest, authorities sent a squad to the airport to keep an eye on her arrival.
