In response to news that the United States had deported Indian students and arrested others for allegedly supporting the Hamas militant group, the ministry of external affairs stated on Friday that it expects Indians living overseas to observe local laws. Days after their student visa was canceled for taking part in pro-Palestine demonstrations, 37-year-old Indian student Ranjani Srinivasan, who is enrolled in Columbia University's PhD program in urban planning, self-deported last week.
Due to security concerns regarding her alleged involvement in "supporting Hamas" operations, the US Department of State revoked their visa on March 5. "We have previously discussed this matter on multiple occasions. Regarding immigration and visa policies, they are sovereign issues that are under each nation's purview.
At a media briefing, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "We expect that when Indian nationals are abroad, they must also comply with local laws and regulations." He did not name the person. "We are given to understand through media reports that this individual has been detained," Randhir Jaiswal stated in response to the detention of Indian scholar Badar Khan Suri in the United States. The person and the US government have not contacted the Embassy or us.
