MK Stalin's Tamil Nadu govt drops rupee symbol from budget, replaces it with symbol in Tamil amid three-language row
By : Sandhya
In the midst of the ongoing three-language dispute, the MK Stalin government changed the rupee sign in the state budget logo to the Tamil letter for "Ru." This may be the first time the national currency sign has been removed by a state. The development takes place against the backdrop of the Tamil Nadu government, led by MK Stalin, opposing the three-language policy and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Regarding this move, the Tamil Nadu government has not yet released an official announcement. But according to a BJP spokesperson who spoke to NDTV, the action reinforces the Tamil party's position that it is "different from India." The BJP's Narayanan Thirupathy went on to say that the rupee is commonly seen as an emblem of India.
