On Tuesday, Dr. Umesh Kumar Singh, the superintendent of Varanasi district jail, was moved to Sonbhadra district jail following accusations of misconduct and harassment from deputy jailer Meena Kanaujia. The director general of the Department of Prison Administration and Reforms, PV Ramashastry, issued the order for the transfer.
Dr Umesh has been appointed as superintendent of Sonbhadra district jail, while his Sonbhadra counterpart, Saurabh Srivastava, will take charge as superintendent of Varanasi district jail. Deputy jailer Meena Kanaujia on Saturday alleged that Dr Umesh had been harassing her for the past year and claimed that she felt threatened.
She called on the government to act in a letter to high-ranking officials. Following the complaint, Kanaujia was sent to Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj. The investigation will be conducted by a three-person team headed by Superintendent Amita Dubey of Naini Central Jail. A senior official stated that the committee will record statements and submit a report within a week.
