Former central banker Mark Carney, who is expected to succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister of Canada, has promised to "rebuild" trade relations with India. With a federal election approaching and the nation coping with US President Donald Trump's trade war and annexation threat, Mark Carney was voted as Canada's next prime minister by the ruling Liberal Party on Sunday.
Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January but will continue to serve as prime minister until his replacement is inaugurated in, is replaced by Mark Carney, 59. Mark Carney received 85.9% of the vote, a landslide victory.
"What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India," Carney said in response to inquiries from the media in Calgary, Alberta, regarding the US tariffs placed on Canada.
