Pakistan Protests 27th Amendment Grants Power to Army Chief Asim Munir

Pakistan Crisis

The political landscape in Pakistan is currently witnessing one of the most significant constitutional overhauls in recent history, triggering nationwide protests led by a multi-party opposition alliance. At the heart of the controversy is the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, a piece of legislation fiercely criticized for institutionalizing the dominance of the military establishment by granting Field Marshal Asim Munir sweeping constitutional powers.

The key driver of this constitutional crisis is the proposed changes to Article 243, which would formalize Munir’s elevated rank and status. Crucially, the amendment creates the powerful new position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), which will be merged with the Army Chief’s office. This move effectively abolishes the existing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) role, centralizing the command of the Army, Navy, and Air Force under one figure: Field Marshal Asim Munir.
