President Droupadi Murmu’s convoy halted at Varkala Model School; she stepped out, accepted flowers and spent minutes with students during a Kerala visit.

President Droupadi Murmu surprised students at Varkala Model Higher Secondary School on October 23 when her convoy stopped and she stepped out to meet children on her way to the Sivagiri Mutt. The brief, unexpected interaction — captured on video and widely shared on social media — delighted pupils, teachers and local residents, turning a routine presidential visit into a memorable school moment.
Murmu was in Kerala to inaugurate the centenary observance of Sree Narayana Guru’s Mahasamadhi at the Sivagiri ashram. While arriving at a newly built helipad in Pramadom, she noticed students waiting by the roadside and walked up to greet them. NCC cadets saluted, children presented marigold flowers they had grown in the school garden, and the President spent about five minutes speaking and accepting greetings — a gesture school staff described as “unforgettable.”
The spontaneous meeting produced warm reactions across the district: the headmaster said students expected only a wave but were thrilled when the President stepped out, and social-media clips show cheers and cameras as Murmu moved among the children. The visit followed her earlier trip to Sabarimala, where she became the first woman head of state to offer prayers at the hill shrine, and was part of a four-day Kerala itinerary that included official engagements in Thiruvananthapuram.
