In a massive push for Maharashtra’s urban infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has given its final, decisive nod to the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase 2, earmarking a significant outlay of ₹9,857.85 crore for the ambitious expansion. This milestone approval is not just about adding more tracks; it’s a commitment to fundamentally reshaping Pune’s urban mobility landscape and easing the notorious traffic congestion that plagues the city’s key IT and residential belts.
The newly sanctioned project primarily covers two crucial elevated corridors, known as Line 4 and Line 4A, together spanning an impressive 31.64 kilometers and incorporating 28 new stations. The financial architecture for this major infrastructure development is a cooperative effort, with the cost being jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral funding agencies. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), the executing body, anticipates completing this project within five years, setting a firm roadmap for the city’s future.
