10 Tamil Nadu bills become laws without governor's assent after Supreme Court's landmark judgement
Following the Supreme Court's intervention on Saturday, ten measures that had been approved twice by the Tamil Nadu assembly but had been put on hold and held for the President's approval by Governor RN Ravi since 2020 were finally signed into law. Due to his disagreement with Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK administration, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi did not approve the laws.
The governor has one month to act on a law, according to a Supreme Court ruling on Saturday. Additionally, it said that within three months, the president should act on the laws that the governors have referred for consideration. The Governor could not hold a bill for the President's consideration after initially refusing assent and the bill passing the assembly again, according to a bench consisting of Justices SB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan.
Generally speaking, the Governor cannot hold a bill for the President until it has been re-presented by the Government following another Assembly vote. In his ruling, Justice Pardiwala stated, "The only exception is when the bill presented in the second round differs from the first version," according to news agency PTI.
