Mehul Choksi arrested: Here's why his extradition to India can take a long time
Mehul Choksi, an Indian fugitive, was taken into custody by Belgian authorities on Saturday on suspicion of engaging in fraudulent activities. It might be difficult to extradite the elusive diamond dealer, though. Since 2018, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India have been searching for 65-year-old Choksi after it was found that he had allegedly cheated the Punjab National Bank (PNB) out of ₹13,850 crore.
One of the complainants in a case against Mehul Choksi, Hariprasad, said that extradition would be difficult because the accused tycoon had a large legal team that had previously helped him avoid the law. "Tradition is a difficult endeavor. Since Choksi has a lot of money, he would hire the top attorneys in Europe to circumvent the procedure, just like Vijay Maliya has been doing. He was reported by ANI as stating, "I don't think it is going to be easy for India to get him back."
KP Fabian, a former ambassador, stated that although India might ask for extradition, the Belgian government had the last say. Additionally, he stated that Choksi has every right to contest the extradition and file an appeal with the court.
