Opposition criticises VP Dhankhar’s remarks on judiciary; BJP hits back
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's recent comments against the judiciary and its operations drew harsh criticism from opposition leaders on Thursday. The Vice President has been accused of weakening the courts and "bordering on contempt" by a number of parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and renowned legal voices.
"The only document that is supreme and most elevated in our democracy is the Indian Constitution. In reference to the Supreme Court's ruling on April 8 requiring the President to act on bills reserved by governors within three months, senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala stated, "No office—be it that of the President, Prime Minister, or Governor—is above the fetters of constitutional propriety." "Timely, accurate, courageous, and a correction to the notion that those holding high office are above checks and balances," he said of the decision.
These worries were echoed by TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee, who charged Dhankhar with exhibiting "repeated disregard" for the judiciary. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's remarks about Supreme Court justices are extremely offensive and verging on contempt. He stated that he is expected to respect and preserve other constitutional institutions in his capacity as a constitutional authority.
