Flying taxis, screens, massage seats: Shangai auto show displays futuristic cars

At this week's massive Auto Shanghai industry exhibition, the focus was on cutting-edge technology and passenger comfort, rather than powerful engines. Since Wednesday, hundreds of carmakers and equipment suppliers have filled the exhibition space, displaying cars outfitted with displays, massaging seats, and other features -- not to mention flying taxis.

Faced with strong competition, Chinese vehicle makers are attempting to attract hyperconnected consumers by mounting screens up to 65 inches wide in front of each passenger, in the doors, in the sun visors, and even on the car bonnet. Meanwhile, electronics behemoths Huawei and Xiaomi are targeting younger clients who can already readily connect their handsets to their vehicles.

European automakers are seeking to compete with their Chinese counterparts, with the first model from Volkswagen's China-focused brand AUDI (deliberately stylized in uppercase letters) including a screen that occupies the whole dashboard. "With the proliferation of intelligent driving, cars will no longer be viewed solely as transportation tools, but will truly become a'second living space,'" consultant firm McKinsey stated in 2025 research on Chinese auto customer preferences.
