Government Issues Advisory on Media Reporting of Defence Operations

On Saturday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advised media outlets not to broadcast live footage of military operations or security force movements. The advise applies to news outlets, internet platforms, and social media users, emphasizing the importance of exercising extreme caution and responsibility when reporting on national security issues.

"In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security-related operations," a statement issued by the Ministry read. The government particularly forbade the real-time transmission of pictures, live reporting from critical places, and the use of "source-based" information regarding active military operations.

It warned that premature revelation of key operational facts could unwittingly help hostile elements, jeopardizing mission effectiveness and crew safety. Citing earlier events such as the Kargil conflict, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the advise emphasized how uncontrolled media coverage in times of crisis has historically resulted in unintended effects adverse to national interests.
