Doctor warns how mindlessly scrolling social media can seriously impact your memory

Have you ever found yourself locked in a never-ending cycle of terrible news, although knowing it's making you feel worse? Doomscrolling may effect your emotions as well as your memory. Dr. Bing, a neurologist who routinely offers brain health tips with his Instagram followers, explained in a post on February 23 how doomscrolling affects memory. Dr. Bing asks in his video, "Have you ever felt like your memory isn't as sharp after spending hours looking through social media? That is not your imagination; there is solid science behind this, so allow me to explain.

He goes on to explain, "Research has shown that those who frequently multitask with digital media have lower sustained attention and working memory. Social media continuously bombards your brain with quick, ever-changing information, conditioning it to seek instant pleasure rather than cultivating deep focus.

When you quickly flick between posts, movies, and notifications, you are not fully engaged with any one thing, and your brain does not effectively store it into memory. Consider your brain to be a chalkboard; when you focus intensely on anything, you clearly write the information."
