Kolkata Metro Nears Completion With Only One Gap Left
Kolkata Metro is close to completing its first circular route, with just a 366-meter stretch at Chingrighata delaying full connectivity between its Orange, Blue, and Green lines. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The Orange Line currently runs to the Ruby crossing. Once the Chingrighata section is bridged, it will connect to Sector V and link with the Green Line. This will allow passengers to form a complete loop back to Esplanade.

Commuters on the Blue Line from Esplanade can already transfer to the Orange Line at New Garia. After the Orange Line reaches Sector V, riders can continue their journey on the Green Line, returning to central Kolkata.
Kolkata Metro to Expand Connectivity With New Ring
Officials also plan to develop another loop by connecting the Purple Line from Joka with the Blue Line at Esplanade and Tollygunge. This project will further increase Kolkata Metro’s coverage and reduce transfer times for daily riders.
Eventually, the Yellow Line from Noapara will link with the airport. That route will allow passengers to return to New Garia on the Orange Line, forming a wider transit circle.
Work on the last 2.6 km of the East-West corridor between Sealdah and Esplanade continues. Metro is complying with safety directives from the Commission of Railway Safety, which approved the segment in April with conditions on fire and signal systems.
Kolkata Metro Improves Passenger Experience With New Features
During a recent event at Howrah and Esplanade stations, officials launched new amenities including digital lockers and massage chairs. These upgrades reflect Kolkata Metro’s commitment to enhancing commuter comfort and efficiency.
The North-South Line currently serves over 700,000 riders daily. Once the East-West section is fully open, officials expect ridership to exceed one million each day, further cementing the system’s role in city life.
Construction at Chingrighata has stalled since February. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited seeks two weekend nights to install the final spans. The remaining 304 meters will cross Sukantanagar and a drainage channel, without disrupting traffic.
Land issues also delay the Purple Line’s Kidderpore station. However, three other underground stations are under construction, and Metro aims to launch the Noapara-Airport section of the Yellow Line later this year.
