India completely cuts off trade, ports, and mail with Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident

As it announced punitive economic measures against the neighboring country on Saturday, India took new steps to fully isolate Pakistan. These measures include prohibiting the import of all goods that originate in Pakistan, banning ships flying the Pakistani flag from calling at Indian ports, and halting the exchange of mail and packages via air and land routes.

The actions, which were taken by the Department of Posts, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), are the most recent in New Delhi's retaliatory actions against Pakistan for its ongoing support of terrorism in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Against the backdrop of India undermining Pakistan at international fora in an attempt to forge a worldwide consensus against Islamabad, the government justified the actions by citing national security and national interest.

Until additional instructions are issued, "all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not they are freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited from being imported or transited directly or indirectly." In a statement released on May 2, the DGFT, a division of the commerce ministry, stated that the limitation was put in place for the sake of public policy and national security.
