Mumbra Railway Tragedy: 4 Dead, 9 Injured After Falling on Tracks
In a tragic incident highlighting the persistent issue of overcrowding in Mumbai’s local trains, four people lost their lives and nine others were injured on Monday morning after falling from an overcrowded train between Mumbra and Diva stations on the Central Railway’s fast line. The mishap occurred around 9:30 am when two local trains passed each other on adjacent tracks. Footboard passengers, unable to find space inside the compartments, are believed to have collided, leading to the fatal fall.
The train involved was headed from Kasara to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) during peak hours. Dr. Rakesh Barot, Dean of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, confirmed that nine injured passengers—seven men and two women—were brought in. Unfortunately, four of them were declared dead. Some of the critically injured have been shifted to Jupiter Hospital for urgent neurosurgical treatment.
Authorities, including Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, are actively monitoring the situation and ensuring proper medical care for the victims. Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Dr. Swapnil Nila, noted that the tragedy likely occurred due to overcrowded conditions forcing passengers onto the footboards, where they may have collided with individuals on the passing train. The incident has sparked fresh concerns and calls for urgent reforms to improve commuter safety in Mumbai's lifeline railway system.
