Kolkata Police forms SIT to probe gang rape of law student, 5 officers named

In a swift response to a horrific incident that has shocked the city, Kolkata Police has constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the gang rape of a 21-year-old law college student. The victim, a third-year law student, was allegedly abducted and assaulted by multiple individuals late last week in the city’s southern suburbs.

The incident reportedly occurred after the victim was lured to a location under false pretenses. She was later found in a traumatised state and admitted to a hospital, where she is currently recovering. Her medical condition is said to be stable, though she remains under close observation and psychological care.

SIT to Ensure Speedy Justice

According to senior police officials, the SIT has been formed to ensure a time-bound and transparent investigation into the matter. The team will work under the supervision of a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-level officer. The five-member SIT includes experienced officers from the Detective Department, the Women’s Grievance Cell, and Cyber Crime units.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal stated, "We are treating this case with utmost seriousness. The SIT will explore all angles and ensure the culprits are brought to justice at the earliest."

Investigation Underway

Police have already collected CCTV footage from the area and are tracking the victim's last known digital communications and social media activity. Preliminary reports suggest that the accused may have been known to the victim, though investigators are not ruling out any possibilities.

Multiple people have been detained for questioning, and forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene. Authorities have also appealed to the public to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.

Public Reaction and Political Response

The incident has sparked public outrage, with protests erupting near the police headquarters demanding swift justice. Student unions and women’s rights organizations have called for stricter safety measures for women and swift legal action against the accused.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, stating that “no one will be spared, regardless of their background or connections.”

The SIT is expected to submit an initial report within a week. The police have assured full transparency and committed to keeping the public updated on the progress of the case.
