At least 34 people have died in Northeast India due to heavy flooding
At least 34 people have died in India’s northeastern region over the past four days due to heavy floods and landslides, officials and media reported on Monday. The weather department has forecast more heavy rain in the coming days.
In the Himalayan state of Sikkim, more than a thousand tourists stranded by flooding are being evacuated, according to a government statement. Meanwhile, army rescue teams have been deployed in Meghalaya to assist over 500 people trapped in flooded areas.
Across the border in Bangladesh, at least four members of a family were killed in a landslide in the northeastern Sylhet district. Hundreds of emergency shelters have been opened in the hilly districts of Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari as precautionary measures.
Authorities have warned of additional landslides and flash floods, urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay vigilant.
Both India’s northeast and Bangladesh frequently face torrential monsoon rains that trigger deadly landslides and flash floods, affecting millions each year.
In Assam’s Silchar city, roads and homes were inundated, with fallen trees blocking streets, according to footage shared by news agency ANI.
