Heavy rain, flash floods, landslides likely in J&K for next 8 days: MeT warns
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a red alert for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides in the region over the next eight days. The forecast has raised concerns, especially in vulnerable and hilly areas that are prone to weather-related disruptions.
According to officials, a strong western disturbance is likely to impact the region starting this week, bringing sustained rain and thunderstorms across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. The MeT Department stated that intense precipitation is expected, particularly in districts such as Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag, and Baramulla, among others.
Authorities have cautioned residents, especially those living near riverbanks, streams, and mountainous areas, to remain vigilant. The risk of flash floods and landslides is high, and people are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. Tourists planning visits to the Kashmir Valley or areas like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are also urged to take precautions or delay travel if possible.
Disaster management teams have been put on alert, and district administrations have been directed to monitor the situation closely and stay prepared for emergency response. Rescue forces, including SDRF and NDRF units, have also been briefed in light of the anticipated weather events.
