Top JeM commander Haider killed in Basantgarh encounter: J&K police chief

Jammu & Kashmir Police Chief has confirmed that the terrorist killed in the recent Basantgarh encounter was none other than Haider, a top commander of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Haider was believed to be responsible for orchestrating several deadly attacks across Jammu and Kashmir, making his elimination a significant success for the Indian security forces.

According to officials, Haider had been active in the region for several years and was one of the most wanted terrorists in the valley. His presence in the Basantgarh area had triggered a large-scale cordon and search operation earlier this week. Acting on intelligence inputs, security forces engaged in a fierce gunfight, eventually neutralising him.

Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain stated that Haider’s elimination is a "major breakthrough" in curbing the terror infrastructure being operated from across the border. "This operation is a clear message to those who try to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Our forces are alert and committed to maintaining law and order," the DGP added.

Sources within the police department revealed that Haider was involved in cross-border infiltration, recruitment of local youth into terror groups, and the execution of multiple attacks on civilians and security personnel. Weapons, ammunition, and incriminating materials were recovered from the encounter site.

Security has been tightened in the surrounding regions following the encounter, with CRPF and local police conducting intensive patrolling and checking operations. The successful operation is expected to deal a blow to the operational capabilities of JeM in the Jammu region, especially as security forces continue to pursue other top commanders believed to be hiding in remote areas.

The local administration has praised the bravery and coordination of the forces involved in the mission, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
