PM Modi Calls India-Maldives Ties ‘As Deep As The Ocean’ After Talks
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the enduring bond between India and the Maldives, calling the island nation India’s “closest neighbour” and a cornerstone of its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi noted that the two countries are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations. “But the roots of our ties are as old as history and as deep as the ocean,” he said.
A commemorative postal stamp, featuring traditional watercraft from both nations, was unveiled to mark the occasion. PM Modi remarked that it symbolizes India and the Maldives not just as neighbours, but as "fellow travellers."
Reaffirming India’s strategic and regional commitment, the Prime Minister added, “India is proud to be the Maldives’ most trusted friend.” He also pledged India’s continued support in strengthening Maldives’ defence capabilities, signaling deeper cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
