Haridwar Mansa Devi stampede kills 6; CM Pushkar Dhami responds
A tragic stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar claimed at least six lives and left several others injured on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on the stairway route leading to the temple.
According to Haridwar District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, panic erupted when someone allegedly shouted about a live electric wire on the path, triggering chaos among the devotees. “As per initial reports, six people have been confirmed dead, and 10–15 others are injured. Those seriously hurt have been referred to higher medical centres,” he said.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident, stating, “Deeply saddened by the tragic news of the stampede. SDRF, local police, and rescue teams are at the spot, conducting relief operations. I am in constant contact with officials and monitoring the situation. Praying to Mata Rani for everyone’s safety.”
SDRF commandant Arpan Yaduvansi said that three teams were immediately dispatched for rescue efforts. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shout about a live wire caused mass panic. Local traders and residents were initially confused before ambulances and police reached the scene to help the injured.
Teerth purohit Ujjwal Pundit from the Ganga Sabha noted that a boundary wall along the path may have contributed to the chaos and resulting stampede. The cause of the panic is under investigation, and officials are questioning eyewitnesses to determine the exact trigger.
