IMD Issues Orange Alert Across Most Konkan Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an orange alert for most districts in the Konkan region and mountainous areas of western Maharashtra, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

In its five-day district-wise weather warning, the IMD also issued a red alert for parts of Pune district's ghat (hill pass) regions, predicting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots. These alerts are valid until 8:30 AM on Thursday.

The Konkan region, comprising Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, is expected to see significant rainfall. An orange alert was specifically issued for Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, while Mumbai and Palghar remain under a yellow alert.

A similar orange alert has been issued for ghat areas in Nashik, Satara, and Kolhapur, anticipating substantial rainfall.

According to IMD classifications:

Red alert signals rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in 24 hours

Orange alert is for rainfall between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in a day

The IMD has also extended the orange alert for Thursday, warning of continued heavy to very heavy showers in the same areas. However, officials noted that alerts may be modified based on evolving weather conditions.

Mumbai witnessed intermittent rainfall throughout Wednesday, adding to the wet spell sweeping across the state.
