Riding with Anthony Volpe, Yankees to start Luis Gil vs. Marlins

Anthony Volpe will start at shortstop Sunday as the New York Yankees aim to avoid a sweep against the Miami Marlins, who have taken the first two games of the series.

Despite leading MLB with 16 errors and a .957 fielding percentage—down from last year—the 24-year-old has shown power at the plate, ranking fourth among shortstops with 17 homers. Volpe shined in Friday’s game, going 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, three runs, two RBIs, and two steals.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Volpe’s defensive struggles but praised his resilience: "Anthony is super tough, and I think he's wired for this.

Sunday’s pitching duel features Dominican right-handers Luis Gil (NY) and Edward Cabrera (MIA, 4-5, 3.35 ERA). Gil, last year’s AL Rookie of the Year (15-7, 3.50 ERA), makes his season debut after recovering from a March lat strain. He has never faced the Marlins.
