Kerala Kalamandalam will welcome a Muslim girl for the first time in its history
Thrissur, At the Kerala Kalamandalam here, a Muslim girl will perform Kathakali, a traditional dance, for the first time in ninety-five years since the reputed university's founding in 1930. Sabri, the 16-year-old daughter of photographer Nizam Ammas, will make her stage debut with a few of her classmates in the evening, performing her favorite song, "Krishna vesham."
The sixteen-year-old claimed that her "dream was going to become a reality" and that she was having trouble putting her joy into words. Sabri is thrilled to be at the institute, where her day begins at 4.30 am and concludes 12 hours later. She plans to pursue a career in dance, particularly Kathakali.
She also wants to learn about the elaborate facial makeup used by Kathakali performers, known as "chutti." "It will be there as a subject next year," she stated. Sabri claimed that although things were a little difficult at first, her dance and academic courses were now proceeding without any problems. Since the dance school opened its doors to girls in 2021, she is the first Muslim girl to enroll.
