New UPI rule regarding mobile numbers to become effective from April 1

New guidelines for enhancing the effectiveness and security of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions have been announced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and they will take effect on April 1, 2025.

The updated guidelines mandate specific actions pertaining to numeric UPI IDs from banks, Payment Service Providers (PSPs), and third-party UPI service providers like PhonePe, GPay, and Paytm. The regulation from the NPCI stated that the Banks, PSP App must use the Mobile Number Revocation List/Digital Intelligence Platform (MNRL/DIP) and update their database in accordance with it on a weekly basis at the very least.

This is to lessen transaction errors brought on by reassigned or out-of-date cellphone numbers. According to Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regulations, a disconnected mobile number may be transferred to a new user following a ninety-day lapse.
