At 40 degrees, Delhi sees hottest day of 2025; IMD predicts heatwave across north India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that March 26 was the warmest day of 2025 in Delhi, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 40.5 degrees Celsius.

The highest temperature recorded by the Ridge observatory on Wednesday was 40 degrees Celsius, 6.3 degrees higher than average. It surpassed Tuesday's record high of 37.1 degrees Celsius, which was the highest of the year. According to the IMD data, the warmest day of the month in 2024 was March 29, when the maximum temperature reached 37.8 degrees Celsius. The hottest day of the previous year was March 15, when the maximum temperature reached 34.3 degrees Celsius.

According to the weather service, there will be almost twice as many heatwave days in Northwest India during the summer. This year, the area is expected to see 10 to 12 heatwave days, compared to the usual five to six days in a season.
