Eyewitnesses recall 'horrendous' Bangkok earthquake: 'Fear many lives lost'
Roads in the capital, Naypyidaw, collapsed due to Friday's magnitude 7.7 earthquake, which also sent shockwaves as far away as China, Thailand, Vietnam, and portions of India. The earthquake occurred 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, and was 10 kilometers deep. The largest tremors to hit the world since 2023 were felt in Bangkok, Thailand, at around 1:21 pm (local time).
Videos posted on social media showed a Bangkok high-rise that was still under construction collapse, however the extent of the damage in Thailand and Myanmar has not yet been assessed. Numerous other structures were also damaged.
In Bangkok, witnesses reported that when buildings trembled and alarms sounded, people fled into the streets in terror. Fraser Morton, a Scottish visitor in one of Bangkok's many malls, said, "Suddenly, the entire building started to move, immediately there was screaming and a lot of panic."
