India delivers first consignment of relief materials to quake-hit Myanmar
New Delhi: After a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar killed almost 700 people, India sent 15 tonnes of relief supplies, including food and medical equipment, to the neighboring nation on Saturday. Along with the initial wave of supplies, a search and rescue squad, and a medical team, an Indian Air Force (IAF) cargo plane touced down in Yangon.
S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, announced on social media that India would increase its aid to Myanmar. A 6.7-magnitude aftershock occurred minutes after the shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred on Friday afternoon northwest of Sagaing city in central Myanmar.
Buildings in a number of places were destroyed by the tremors, and Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar with 1.7 million inhabitants, was said to have suffered significant damage. The Mandalay region saw around 700 fatalities and 1,700 injuries, while Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, saw 10 additional dead.
