Indian fisherman, lodged in Pakistan's Karachi jail since 2022, dies by suicide: Report

On Wednesday, an Indian fisherman is said to have committed himself at a prison in Pakistan's Malir neighborhood of Karachi. According to the report, because many boats lack the equipment to pinpoint their precise location and some maritime boundaries are not clearly designated, Indian fishermen are frequently arrested for engaging in illegal fishing.

According to the article, 52-year-old Gaurav Ram Anand "hung himself" with a rope in the prison barracks' restroom, citing jail superintendent Arshad Husain. "Every Indian prisoner is confined in the barracks," Husain stated. The article further stated that "he [the fisherman] went to the washroom on Tuesday night and ended his life."

According to the jailer, at 2:20 am (2.50 am IST), the inmate was inspected by the duty physician, who pronounced him dead. Following an inquest, a magistrate ordered the remains to be held at the Edhi Foundation's cold storage facility in Sohrab Goth pending the completion of legal proceedings and additional directives.
