China urges US to ‘completely cancel’ Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs
After President Donald Trump declared an exemption for smartphones, laptops, and other consumer goods, China's commerce ministry on Sunday urged the US to "completely cancel" its reciprocal duties. According to a ministry spokeswoman cited by AFP, "We urge the US to take a big step to correct its mistakes, completely cancel the wrong practice of 'reciprocal tariffs' and return to the right path of mutual respect."
On Saturday, the administration of US President Donald Trump declared that laptops, smartphones, and a few other goods would not be subject to tariffs. According to AFP, the Chinese commerce ministry urged the Trump administration to change its tariff policies, saying, "The bell on a tiger's neck can only be untied by the person who tied it."
Beijing stated that they were still considering the decision to exclude certain gadgets because, following the country's exclusion from a 90-day tariff respite, the majority of Chinese imports are still subject to a general 145% levy.
