Thursday Bank Holiday: Why RBI Declared May 29 a Holiday for Banks

Banks across India will mostly remain open on Thursday, 29 May 2025. However, all government and private sector banks in Himachal Pradesh will remain closed due to the observance of Maharana Pratap Jayanti. Customers in the state will not be able to visit bank branches to carry out any transactions on this day.

Why Are Banks Closed in Himachal Pradesh?

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is celebrated in honor of Maharana Pratap, the valiant ruler of Mewar known for his resistance against the Mughal Empire. His courage, patriotism, and self-respect continue to inspire generations of Indians. The day is marked with tributes, cultural events, and public gatherings, particularly in states where his legacy is deeply respected.

As per the RBI’s bank holiday calendar, banks in Himachal Pradesh will observe a public holiday on this occasion. In all other states, banks will operate as usual.
