Ukraine Confirms F-16 Loss, Pilot Dies Intercepting Russian Missiles, Drones
Ukrainian F-16 Shot Down, Pilot Killed Defending Against Record Russian Strike
A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was shot down and its pilot killed during a massive Russian aerial assault overnight, Ukraine’s military confirmed on June 29, 2025. This is Ukraine’s third confirmed F-16 loss since acquiring the Western-made jets.
Pilot Dies A Hero
The pilot, Lt Col Maksym Ustymenko, 32, was credited with shooting down seven incoming threats during what Ukraine called the largest single-night Russian aerial offensive of the war. After exhausting all onboard weapons, Ustymenko’s aircraft was hit while targeting an eighth threat. He diverted the jet away from populated areas before crashing, but did not survive.
Massive Russian Barrage
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 477 drones and 60 missiles targeting multiple regions. Despite downing 211 drones and 38 missiles, the sheer volume overwhelmed parts of Ukraine’s defense systems.
Civilian Areas Hit
Strikes caused extensive damage in at least six regions, hitting homes, infrastructure, and industrial sites. Several civilians, including children, were injured.
The Ukrainian military praised Lt Col Ustymenko for his bravery, saying his actions saved lives and mitigated further destruction.
